SOMETHING NEW AT THE WEYR
A few years ago I accepted, as partial payment for an endurance prospect, a lovely Babson/Turfa mare, Khayla GCA. She was maiden at the time and had only been used for riding but her temperament and personality were such that I knew she would be an ideal addition to our herd and perfect for the nieces and nephews to learn on.
Jennifer Ligon, of Avalon Mist Arabians, and I decided to breed her to Jen's Straight Babson stallion, Ibn Fadl BW, an excellent example of SBE breeding, both talented and accomplished. Ibby has competed successfully in Dressage and Sport Horse in Hand in addition to putting some excellent foals on the ground.
Shortly after, Jacquie Peregoy contacted me to find out if I was interested in taking on a new breeding project, nothing less than a full-court press to save the Babson/Turfa horses for the future. She sent me her incredible piece of work, a spread sheet listing all the B/T horses, alive and deceased, with *Turfa percentage, age, breeder, owner and current home, and potential availability for breeding.
I really did not need much convincing, Khayla is a perfectly charming mare and had already proved herself as fantastic babysitter for young riders. If this was a B/T, I wanted more! In short order, Falala PW arrived on a lease from her owner, Lynnette Phieffer. Then Anne and Bernal Ness (Ness Arabian Horse Ranch) kindly allowed their wonderful NAHR Serr Faraad, the highest percentage *Turfa stallion alive at 28.1%, to come live permanently at The Weyr, and Janet Wetter, owner of Wetterlands Ranch, sent the two full sisters, DV Sweetie Pie and WLF Khabara, to be bred to Faraad.
We now have three mares in foal to Faraad and Khalya will be bred to him after she delivers her Ibby foal.
In the past decade only ten Babson/Turfa foals have been born! Of these, two are at The Weyr and in foal. In our on-going effort to increase the numbers of B/T horses, we are interested in acquiring more mares for Faraad. If you are lucky enough to own a B/T mare and wish to breed her to a B/T stallion, please contact us. We have a special breeding policy for the owners of B/T mares or Babson mares who wish to breed them to Faraad.
